IRC start, PHS boats waiting in the background
  Waglan 1

Excellent visibility, blue skies and a 5-knot easterly breeze made a great start to the Aberdeen Boat Club’s Waglan Series 2026-27. But over Hong Kong Island, a thunderhead was forming and race officer, Alex Johnston, wisely moved the start nearer to Stanley and, at 1100, had nine competitive racing boats away on Course 22 (L). Five minutes later, off went five cruisers on the same course.

With Arcturus+ leading the way, it didn’t take long for the IRC boats to reach Fury Rocks. Next came, well, Next! Back in action was the club’s very own high-performer, Redeye. After covering the 15-nautical-mile course, Arcturus+ came out tops in IRC 1 and Lewis Cerne’s Wicked prevailed in IRC 2.

The PHS boats worked hard in the fading breeze and, after 4 hours, 18 minutes and 5 seconds, Thomas Wong’s DBX2 crossed the finish. On handicap, though winner of the A division was Skywalker. With barely minutes to the 1700 cut-off, Five O One took the PHS B division gun in an inspiring show of patience, determination and true grit!
